What is the difference between 14k and 18k gold?

The main difference here is the gold percentage. Three-quarters of 18k gold material is actual gold - the other materials are metal alloys. Just under two-thirds of 14k gold materials are actual gold and its other materials are alloyed metals, including palladium and silver, copper and nickel.

It's because of the difference in the gold percentage that the colours of 14k and 18k jewellery will look slightly different. You'll notice that the higher percentage of alloys in 14k gold pieces makes the colour lighter in tone than 18k gold jewellery NZ customers love.

Although these are both highly popular selections in New Zealand, there are other differences between them, too. 14k gold tends to be more robust because it has more alloys.

Is 14k or 18k gold better for everyday wear?

Jewellery that features 14k gold is great for everyday wear. Being long-lasting, it's a fine choice for those who are constantly on the go or lead an active lifestyle.

It's highly resistant to wear and tear because it contains a higher percentage of metal mixtures than 18k gold jewellery. This means it's more robust than 18k gold. So whether you work with your hands or move around a lot during the day, you can confidently wear your stunning 14k gold jewellery every day.

Is 18k gold more expensive than 14k gold?

14k gold contains a lower gold content than 18k gold. For this reason, 14k gold is the more affordable choice. But other factors can affect the cost or regular price, too. You may, for example, compare two types of engagement rings in a New Zealand jewellery shop, one made of 14k gold with natural diamonds and the other made of 18k gold.

You might be surprised to find that the 14k gold wedding ring may cost more than the 18k ring. But remember that this is because of the diamonds’ value.

As a general guide, though, our gold jewellery collection experts advise that 14k gold can cost approximately 50% less than its 18K gold alternative per ounce.

At Camile and Stone NZ, we offer a range of customisable jewellery pieces. We stock the 18k gold engraved personalised bar necklace, and our pillar bar name necklace. With this latter option, you can select the number of inscriptions you wish to include, which is between one and four.

We are also pleased to stock a two name engraved bar necklace, which you can customize with two names, and engraved rings, available in four ring sizes, that we can customise for you with a single initial of your choice. We're proud to offer you our customisable range, so search our collection of real gold jewellery NZ customers love to find the right option for you!

Which gold is better for sensitive skin: 14k or 18k?

If you are allergy-prone, it's always worth considering selecting gold pieces that have higher karats. This is a wise choice in many cases since lower karat gold pieces contain higher quantities of metal alloys, and some of these can cause a skin allergy in some individuals.

Yet, if you are still keen on gold bracelets or a 14k gold necklace, and you are prone to allergies, there are a few other options you can choose! We advise purchasing a yellow gold or a rose gold piece, which typically do not contain nickel metal alloys and still look absolutely stunning.

How can I care for my 14k or 18k gold jewellery?

A good cleaning process will keep the jewellery in the right state and ensure it retains its shine and lasts a long time. The tips we recommend at Camile and Stone include the following:

  • Soak the jewellery piece: Begin by soaking the jewellery piece to remove the contaminants from the gold surface. Our gold jewellery experts recommend soaking the piece for a three-hour duration in a solution of warm water and dish soap.

  • Scrub the jewellery: With a cotton swab or soft brush, you now need to dislodge the remaining deposits with a gentle motion. You can alternatively use a soft toothbrush for those pieces that have uneven surfaces.

  • Dry the piece of jewellery: Let the jewellery pieces dry in the air or dry them very gently with a soft cloth to remove water. When choosing cloths, remember not to use paper towels, which may leave scratches behind on the gold jewellery's surface.

What types of gold jewellery does Camile and Stone NZ offer?

A stunning range of gold jewellery is available through Camile and Stone NZ! Here, you will find fine gold necklaces such as our fine chain 18k solid yellow gold necklace, which is tarnish-free and hypoallergenic, compatible with individuals who want to enjoy gold jewellery in New Zealand without worrying about skin reactions. You can wear this beautiful, refined piece on its own or with an additional elegant pendant.

We also offer moissanite rings that come in 18k gold vermeil materials. These pieces reflect the light and sparkle as brightly as the highest-quality diamonds, while the gold vermeil materials of our wider range of pieces, such as the sideways single initial letter solid heart necklace, comprise an 18k gold layer applied over a sterling silver chain.

Can I mix 14k and 18k gold in my jewellery collection?

Absolutely! You can definitely have a combination of 14k and 18k gold in your jewellery collection and you can wear them together, too. It's by mixing karats that you can create a look that's unique to you and incredibly stylish. In using the mixed metal look, for instance, you can combine almost any selection of gold pieces and karats.

Being mindful of the slightly different colours of 14k and 18k gold can help you create the look you've been dreaming of. Remember that 14k gold jewellery may have a slightly lighter tone than 18k gold jewellery, and this will mean that each type can contrast against each other, creating a bold or layered look. The style choice is up to you!
